Harvest Story: Illinois youth hunt weekend, Jack was ready to shoot the first doe in the field, but luckily I talked him into waiting. Unicorn entered the field around 6 p.m., and Jack missed him around 6:15 p.m. He went with his does towards the other end of the field. It was our lucky day though, he came back with the does around 30 minutes later. Jack took another shot, he ran a short distance and stopped, he then stood facing away for what seemed like forever, and we could tell he was hurt. He then started walking out of the field and Jack got one more shot off at him. We were unsure of the hit, so we waited 3 hours before looking. We didn’t find very much blood, but could tell he was hurting, because he wasn’t able to climb out of the creek. We decided to back out and returned the next morning with a tracking dog. The dog made quick work of the track, as Unicorn had only went about 50 more yards than we tracked the night before. He was still really warm and not very stiff, so its a good thing we backed out when we did. The shot was back a little too far and a little low. Pretty awesome hunt for this father and son duo, and my 7 yr olds second deer.
