Harvest Story: The first ever velvet hunt in the state of Arkansas had us all very excited to be able to harvest a deer in full velvet. Saturday September 7th was Brooks’s 7th birthday. After several hours of sweating in a blind this deer decided to give him a shot. He was in full velvet Saturday afternoon. It seemed that all the stars were aligned for a Pope & Young, velvet, “birthday buck”……. Not quiet. Swing and a miss. It is tough getting over a miss as an adult, luckily kids are resilient. We had a baseball tournament Sunday afternoon and couldn’t hunt. Knowing he was alive and still close, I knew we had to try him on the last day. Monday afternoon Brooks got a redemption story on this great buck. He came in on the same trail as before and Brooks made a perfect shot. Velvet hanging makes for a neat picture and a memory of a lifetime for me and my boy. The good Lord painted a picture perfect September evening in an Eastern AR bean field.
